Rain gutter leaf guards and cleaning in Lockhart

Gutters Made Easy handles rain gutter installation, repair, and replacement in Lockhart, TX, with seamless rain gutters formed on site to fit Victorian houses near the square, older brick homes, and newer builds on the edges of town. A lot of the calls we get in Lockhart start with leaves. Pecans and live oaks shade many of the older streets, and a gutter under that canopy can clog in a single season. Leaf guards and a sensible cleaning schedule are often the first fix, with full replacement saved for systems that are past saving.

Choosing leaf guards for pecan and oak litter

Pecan trees drop leaves, catkins, and husks, and live oaks shed in spring. Wide leaves sit on top of most guards and blow off. The trouble is the small material: catkin strands, bits of husk, and grit washing off older roofs. We install fine mesh guards over seamless gutters so that material stays out of the trough, and we set the guard pitch to match the roof so water does not shoot past the front edge in a downpour.

If guards are not in the budget yet, regular gutter cleaning still does the job. Under heavy canopy we suggest one cleanout in late spring after the oaks finish and another in early winter after the pecans drop. Clogs often start at the downspout outlet rather than in the gutter itself, so we flush every downspout while we are up there.

Black waxy clay and where roof water goes

The northwest part of Caldwell County lies in the blackland prairie, where the Handbook of Texas describes “black, waxy soils” (Texas State Historical Association, Caldwell County). Much of the ground in and around Lockhart is that kind of clay. It swells when it takes on water and shrinks and cracks when it dries. A downspout that dumps at the corner of the house keeps the soil against the foundation wet while the rest of the yard dries out, and that uneven moisture is what moves slabs and pier and beam homes alike.

We extend downspouts several feet from the wall and, where the yard is flat, tie them into buried pipe that lets the water out well away from the house. The same Handbook entry puts average rainfall in the county at about 35 inches a year, so the discharge plan has to handle a hard spring storm, not just a light rain.

Gutter repair or a 6 inch replacement

Many older homes here still have 5 inch gutters, or no gutters at all on some roof faces. A 5 inch K-style gutter is fine on a small, low pitched roof. For a two story house, a steep Victorian roof, or a long back porch that gathers water from a big area, we usually spec 6 inch seamless gutters with larger downspouts. The bigger trough holds more water before it spills, and wider outlets clog less often under leaf litter. When a repair call turns up a gutter that overflows in every storm, the real fix is often a size change rather than another tube of sealant.

Repair still makes sense in plenty of cases. A single sagging section, a corner joint that drips, or a downspout knocked loose by a ladder can be fixed in a short visit. If the gutter is sound and only a few hangers have let go, we rehang it into solid wood and reseal the corners. We will tell you plainly which side of that line your system is on.

Rain barrels and drainage add ons

Some homeowners would rather keep part of their roof water than send it all to the yard. We install rain barrels and larger water collection tanks fed from a single downspout, usually on the side of the house closest to the garden. Others need the opposite: a way to move water farther than an extension can reach. Buried drain lines from the downspouts to a low spot or the street are common on flat lots with clay underneath, and they keep the yard usable instead of soggy for days after a storm. Both are easier to plan at the same time as new gutters, since the downspout locations decide where the water starts.

Historic district homes and older fascia

Houses in the Courthouse Square Historic District, and designated landmarks outside it, fall under the city’s historic preservation ordinance. The City of Lockhart says a certificate for alteration is required for work that affects the appearance of a building, and those applications go to the Historical Preservation Commission (City of Lockhart, Historical Preservation FAQ). If your house is in the district, check with the city before changing the gutter profile or color. We can put the profile, size, color, and downspout layout in writing for your application.

Older homes also tend to have original wood fascia that has dried out or gone soft. We check every board before hanging anything. Hangers go into solid wood, soft sections get replaced, and sound fascia can be covered with an aluminum wrap. On a Victorian or early 1900s house, a half round profile usually suits the trim better than K-style, and copper is an option where the house calls for it. Our article on Victorian homes and blackland clay goes deeper on matching profile to period.

  • Absolutely fantastic job. The team showed up first thing Monday morning and got right to work. In no time at all they were done, and results were perfect. The rain gutter across the front of the house was exactly what I needed, and it blended right in with the color of the house trim. Brian and Joe knew exactly what they were doing. I was obvious they had done this before. I could not be more satisfied. I definitely recommend Gutters Made Easy!
